Xbox 360 for WindowsThe Xbox 360 Controller for Windows is floating around at various retail outlets like Best Buy, OfficeMax, and RadioShack. The controllers are the wired Xbox 360 USB controllers, but cost $5 extra as they include a software CD to get Windows XP to recognize it. Blatant rip-off aside, if you want to get your hands on one, I recommend using Best Buy online. The controller is hard to find, but if you go to any product page on the site, you can add the controller to your basket by entering the following into your address bar and pressing enter:

javascript:fnAddItemToCartWithAccessories(‘1124432 188134’,‘7477349’

Then, choose In-Store Pickup and see if any stores near you have them in stock. If so, make the purchase, and go pick up your controller. I actually had trouble picking mine up, as when I arrived at Best Buy I was told they were not going to give it to me until November 22nd’s launch. They refused to budge until I spoke with the Media Supervisor and schooled her on how this was not the same SKU as the actual Xbox 360 wired controller, and that the Windows team just released this version early.

Project Gotham Racing 3

We tinkered with the Xbox 360 at DigitalLife in NYC, and played a demo build of Project Gotham Racing 3.  Initially, it was hard to get really excited about a racing game for a next gen console, but fans of the preceding games will tell you that the PGR series is nothing to scoff at.  I can say first hand that this title is stunning in just about every aspect.  It was unbelievable listening to my iPod songs right on the racetrack.  Yeah, I know the current Xbox allows you to customize soundtracks, but there is no importing or modding necessary – just plug it in.  As a resident of New York, I can tell you that PGR3 got the entire Brooklyn Bridge area 100% accurate - down to the scaffolding in lower Manhattan.  What even more stunning is that there are more polygons on the Brooklyn Bridge than an entire level in PGR2.  The photo mode is absolutely phenomenal.  You can even adjust the shutter speed of the camera to show you whizzing by or at a great focus.  Additionally, while in this mode, I couldn’t find even two people in the crowd that were the same.  Look for this game to stun you at launch. Check out one more image after the jump.

Channel 9 Xbox 360 Media Center Video

One of the most overlooked features of the Xbox 360 is it’s ability to connect to your Window Media Center PC (if you own one) to access all your media library. There is no one better to show off this great feature than the people who know it best: Jeff Henshaw of the Xbox team and David Alles of the Media Center team. Check out the video over at Channel 9.

Wal-Mart Xbox 360 KioskGotta love Wal-Mart - according to our readers, Wal-Mart locations nationwide are beginning to roll out Xbox 360 kiosk with playable demos of Call of Duty 2, Kameo, and King Kong. The discs also feature videos of other upcoming games. If you want to get an early look at the Xbox 360, give your nearest Wal-mart location a call and see if they have a kiosk. Sly 3 GiveawayOkay, so we believed G4TV when they said that the Xbox 360 faceplates handed out to the press at E3 would not fit on the final 360 unit. So to make it right, we are giving away a brand new copy of Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves for the PlayStation 2. In order to win, just head on over to our forums and post an image of what you consider to be the coolest Xbox 360 faceplate design - whether it is official or a mockup. Next week we will choose the one that we thought was the best. Contest is open to US residents, and if a winning image is posted more than once, the first person who posted it gets the game. Now will you forgive us?

E3'05 360 Faceplate

Okay, it looks like we owe an apology to one of our previous contest winners. You see, when we gave away our E3’05 collectible limited edition faceplate, we talked up how one would be able to put this thing onto their Xbox 360 and have an ultra-rare system. Turns out that information is false. The limited edition faceplates don’t even fit on the final production Xbox 360 bezel. All it is, is a rare collectors item - nothing more, nothing less. Unless you break out your dremel tool and teach that faceplate just who is boss. For the guy who paid $800 for one on eBay, a shame.

EDIT: Looks like the Major says that the face plates work just fine. Looks like we tried to hook ours up to a production or debug unit rather than the final box. G4TV.com was wrong again. False alarm, thankfully. Still no excuse for dropping $800 on one though. Thank you, disprover.

Xbox 360 Impressions

At DigitalLife 2005, I was able to get my hands on the controller and speak one on one with a Microsoft representative before the mass of public invaders crowded up the whole space.  Aside from taking some close up pictures of a few of them, I got to fiddling with the entire media aspect of the Xbox 360. It was already connected to a Windows Media Center PC for convenience and its USB ports were equipped with a few cables that would be used later in this demo.  Once I got the controller in my hand, I noticed that it was very familiar since the design is so similar to the current S controller for Xbox.  I got to tinker around with the Xbox Live interface where you can do an infinite number of things not found in the current version of Xbox Live.

Xbox 360 Launch Trouble

This is just bad news for those who have yet to pre-order an Xbox 360 in the hopes of snagging one on launch. In an interview with Eurogamer, J Allard talked about the challenges that lie ahead with the planning of a worldwide launch window. While Microsoft if hard at work on the production front, Allard believes that there just may not be enough at launch, stating “I think no matter how big the number becomes, it still won’t satisfy the demand. We decided we’re going to take a little bit of heat on allocations, frankly, in all the territories rather than take a lot of heat in one or two territories.” If you don’t have a unit pre-ordered, be sure you are at Wal-Mart early.

Xbox 360 Launch Okay, so Microsoft has been continually saying that we should expect about 20 games to be available on November 22 for Xbox 360 launch. At X05, we got a glimpse at what we could expect to see on store shelves. At X05Microsoft confirmed eight launch titles, five of which are from Electronic Arts: Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo: Elements of Power, Perfect Dark Zero, Madden NFL 06, NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, FIFA 06, and Need for Speed Most Wanted. Activision went on to announce four of their own Xbox 360 launch titles: Call of Duty 2, Quake 4, Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland, and GUN (a brand new Western-themed action game). Furthermore, Take-Two announced that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, NBA 2K6, NHL 2K6, Top Spin 2, and Amped 3 available at launch. Throw Dead or Alive 4 into this lineup and it doesn’t look too shabby at all.

Gamestop 360 Omega PlasmaGamestop continues to the the leader in ridiculously exorbitant Xbox 360 bundles, creating something even more grandiose than the original Omega Bundle (which we are giving away over on Gear Live.) Behold, the Omega With Dell Plasma Bundle. Basically, it’s everything that the regular Omega Bundle comes with - including 20 freaking games - plus a 42-inch Dell Plasma screen. The cost of entry? $4,499.68. Go ahead and take that all in. I don’t think that bundle will be selling out any time soon.
